hyenah, has, over the last few years helped forge strong ties between the deep house mecca of johannesburg and the cutting edge electronic scene in europe. with a handful of influential and pivotal releases and remixes on a few key labels (objektivity, drumpoet, poker flat, toytonics) hyenah has established himself as a major talent to follow. with his residency and label night rise at berlin institution watergate going from strength to strength, a busy touring schedule taking in ibiza, angola, asia and the u.s, we’re very pleased hyenah still found time to get into the studio so we can present you with the next instalment, the usuthu ep. lead track usuthu featuring the vocals of b’utiza opens the release in fine style with crisp, percussive beats laying the foundation for the precision synths and trademark hyenah afro vibes. those who loved the wish, tale of the dirt and the idea will love this worthy follow up! next up is a second original entitled phases featuring the hypnotic tones of nonku, a much deeper affair but with no less energy and atmosphere. just a more heads down groove for the warm ups and wind downs, nonku’s wonderful vocal elements adding the perfect soulful touch. flipping over we have a wonderful remix from the inimitable mr raoul k. the ivory coast native now residing in berlin has continually wowed us here at freerange with his boabab and mule musiq releases. with his collaborative release alongside manoo just about to drop on innervisions (including a killer dixon edit!), we’re excited to bring you an epic mr raoul k remix of title track usuthu. setting the mood with lush strings and a beautifully paced, beatless intro, raoul k slowly introduces the beats and keyboard parts, layering up the elements and building the energy in the process, resulting in a very special, dynamic version that will connect on a deep level with all who experience it on the dance floor.

after moving from london to berlin cromby is back on tenderpark with his second ep for the vinyl label. the young man recreates our love for deep house with two sample-based tracks which showcase his ever advancing skills with the old school akai sampler mpc 2000 xl as well as his cool understanding of mixing haunting melodies with gripping groove patterns. the remix on the flip side comes from hip-hop super producer gone house lover hodini who has collaborated with the talented bass player chez kerim for this funky workout. the cover image shot by achim valbracht is the start of a new artwork series developed by tenderpark art director till sperrle which revolves around critique of investor-driven architechture that has been dominating berlin for several decades now. the speciously precious and glittering image displays a normalised and globally standardised kind of beauty but at the same time reveals a strong sense of loneliness. as always both the mastering and as well as the lacquer cut of this record have been carefully executed by vinyl sound mastermind helmut erler at dubplates & mastering.

strictly strictly is a new label with 4 heavy mpc-based house-jams by berlin-based producer rwin. strictly emotional affect with lush and spheric sedatives on the a-side and strictly dance-floor material on the b-side where he prays for jack and compels to move.

having previously impressed for burek and five fold separately, berlin based italian duo autre and two thou teamed up for a split record on croatian fields & forests imprint. the record showcases a nice combination of eclectic rhythms, funky basses and spacey solos but despite its club signature and retro-futuristic vibe, solar society is still more of a cosmic porch burner rather than a dancefloor banger.

disco stomper with diva vocals another extremely rare underground record on p&p. this time however and quite shockingly not a patrick adams or a greg carmichael production. nonetheless ôainÆt it timeö is a massive disco cut written, arranged and produced by arthur manning and p. j. wyatt paired with great vocals by soul, disco and gospel vocalist gwendolyn dennison better known for her stage name as queen yahna. queen yahna s career has seen her perform on broadway as maria in the hit musical, -porgy & bess- and the national company of -the wiz- as -evillene-. based in berlin, germany, queen yahna has had a successful career outside theater as well, cutting a few dance records over the year

lady chann & rapha team up for ‘hard drive’… the uk’s ‘number one dancehall queen’ returns with a storming carnival heater called ‘hard drive’. ‘back it up, hard drive’ is the command from the lady on this minimal dancehall rhythm, which packs in solid sub-bass, a bark, and some well-placed/spaced-out percussion. the producer is the bern, switzerland born and raised raphaël ‘rapha’ gasser, who became hooked on dancehall after hearing a mixtape by berlin-based supersonic sound and has gone on to collaborate with the genre mainstays like i-octane, sheba, kiprich and more. on the flip b-side is the remix by newark-based jersey club original r3ll, upping the bpm and sure to keep forward thinking dance-floors bubbling. kick n clap is the record label founded by django django’s dave maclean.

spatial cues is a series of split singles sounding out main(void)’s and kon janson’s shared musical space. operating out of berlin and london, the two artists join forces to showcase their mutual vision of techno music. cues003 explores the darker side of the series with a focus on low frequencies, echoing percussions, and vast spaces, evoking a deep introspective motion. diffracting a manifold of sounds around its massive kick drum, cues003 a builds and releases tension through a dramatic sequence of smooth swells and intense surges. grounded by its captivating groove, cues003 b evolves around the sinister funk of fierce fm bass stabs, leading up to a powerful break that introduces a razor-edged hi-hat.

arriving as the third outing of len faki’s recently established non-profit platform lf rmx, these previously exclusive edits take on a raging classic by courtesy of frankie bones, godfather of the north-american rave scene. the new hardspace mix bolsters up the characteristic vocal and synths for even more frantic effect but trades in the percussion for faki’s signature assault of claps and hats. these also dominate the stripped-back hardspace tool, which carefully builds momentum only around the sirens and some seriously sizzling low-end rumble. both of faki’s personal mixes capture the original’s raw energy, yet manage to appear in both sleek but powerful presence. as with all releases of lf rmx, the proceeds of this record will be donated to the berlin charity project straßenkinder e.v. to be used in actions against child poverty.

running a label with the ambition to push new and unique voices isn t always an easy task. while finding new artists is about as hard as finding a black t-shirt in berlin, most budding artists seem pressured to conform or mimic the already established, only to be heard. performing under the artist name bleie, oakland resident sarah bly is not one of them. originally hailing from seattle, she indeed works with the mortar of techno form, but uses different bricks altogether. it s a hard sound to articulate, at first, it s almost alienating to ears worn by years in dark clubs. its mercurial, yet still surprisingly club compatible nature makes it an aural tiger balm – it burns and soothes at once. this compositional depth is perhaps a result of bleie s background as a trained pianist and violinist, by which she transmutes the commonly associated tropes of the genre. bleie lets the elements rule over the form, giving the tracks a morphing and unpredictable feel. obviously we were instantly intrigued when stumbling across her music, and now extremely proud to present her vinyl debut certainty is only a feeling . four tracks of unique techno so brimfully suggestive that it s nearly peerless. we can t imagine this leaving anyone unaffected.

it goes without saying that space has always been central to techno – both in terms of its cosmic and futuristic trajectory, as well as in the spatial dimensions of sonic elements. etapp kyle’s first full ostgut ton ep release sees the ukrainian-born, berlin- based berghain resident emphasizing the connection between the two, while avoiding techno’s overt intergalactic clichés. by partially linking to his continuum ep (unterton, 2016), the results are four tracks of pristine, sci-fi minimalism, propelled by ambient synths and percussive explosions in distant skies – more utopian than dystopian. opener “alpha” establishes the cosmic theme from the get go, with chord swells and a whirring, phasing spacewind panning across the stereo image. while a subdued kickdrum gets things started, it’s the rhythmic interplay between dynamic high-hats and halled-out rimshots that guide the track through space. from there, “quantum” on a2 strips the voyage down to a glowing, unwavering arpeggiated synth line, interspersed with twisted, high-pitched bells and updated 909- esque snare patters.

sven weisemann is set to release his ‘bilateral relations’ ep via copenhagen’s echocord this september, comprising four originals from the german producer. sven weisemann has been immersed in the underground house and techno scene for quite some time now having started djing in 1997 during the rise of the scene on his home turf of berlin and going on to release material via the likes of amsterdam’s delsin, mojuba, telrae and liebe.detail amongst many more. here though we see sven joining the roster of echocord, a perfect fit for his more dubbed out compositions with artists like fluxion, rod modell and stl on the roster. ‘lunation’ opens the release and sees weisemann fuse emotive string melodies and cavernous vocal echoes with off- kilter rhythms and rounded sub hits before title-track ‘bilateral relations’ embraces a more direct four-four approach via sparse percussion and tumbling toms alongside choppy bass stabs and ever-unfolding, echoing dub chords. opening the flip is ‘monistic’, an airy ethereal number employing billowing pads, bright synth chimes and a dropped tempo dubbed out feel to create something truly stunning and thought provoking before the ‘decimation (valvle tr9 mix) closes things on a darker tip with looming stab swells, heavily swung drums and sporadic growling bass drones.

das ist die dritte veröffentlichung vom label funk injacktion records aus berlin als kollaboration von d. instructed und froyd. eine skurrile mischung aus rudimentärem industrial samba und free jazz artefakten frei von der leber weg und säurefestem electrofunk . einigen freunden der elektronischen musik ist sicher noch der name autopilot vom label elektrolux aus frankfurt bekannt. das projekt d. instructed steht für eine freie herangehensweise an analoge instrumente bzw drums . aus den jams und der improvisation entstehen die tracks genauso wie bei froyd, über die ehemalige stadtgrenze berlins hinaus. aus der ehemaligen ost-west-wurzel entstand ein neues mutterschiff für den märkischen funk.

kurz nach dem release ihres hochgelobten zweitlings >they were wrong so we drowned< zog die band nach berlin um dort das 2006er album >drums not dead< aufzunehmen, ein weiteres konzeptalbum das mindestens genauso surreal klingt wie sein vorgänger. kurz nach der veröffentlichung erreichte >drums not dead< platz 6 auf pitchforks jahres-album-top-50.
